What Is a Porcelain Veneer?

A dental veneer is a tooth-colored porcelain or composite shell that is cemented over the front surfaces of your teeth to correct dental issues such as worn tooth enamel, wide spacing, uneven tooth alignment, tooth discoloration, and chips or cracks.

Porcelain Veneers

The most common types of veneers are traditional porcelain veneers, Lumineers, and composite resin veneers. Porcelain veneers, according to AACD, are preferable for correcting shape or color issues and can last anywhere from 10 to 20 years.

They can cost anywhere from $800 to $2,000 per tooth, depending on where you live in the United States, which can be a significant expense for most consumers, so it is important to understand that they will need to be replaced eventually.

Why Are Porcelain Veneers Used?

Although veneers are classified as cosmetic dentistry because they help to improve smiles by providing beautifully aligned, shapely teeth, they also have protective properties and could eliminate the need for more extensive treatments. Other advantages include increased durability, a more attractive smile, and the need for little-to-no tooth structure removal when compared to crowns.

Whatever the cause of your unsightly teeth, dental veneers may be able to solve most, if not all, of your cosmetic dental issues, including:

Worn Enamel

Tooth enamel can become worn or dulled naturally over time (from drinking soft drinks, tea, or coffee, smoking, and using certain medications) or as a result of a genetic predisposition. Veneers are ideal for correcting smiles with worn enamel.

Wear and Tear

Our teeth naturally begin to wear down as we age. Chips, cracks, and an uneven appearance are more common in older teeth. Veneers can help to restore the natural appearance of healthy, young teeth.

Genetics

Some people are born with abnormal tooth spacing that widens with age.

Uneven Teeth

Uneven teeth can be caused by teeth grinding/gnashing and/or general wear and tear. This can result in bite problems (malocclusion) as well as cosmetic smile issues.

Discoloration

Some tooth discoloration may not be completely removed by teeth whitening. Veneers can provide a simple, cosmetic solution for such issues.
