Root Canal Treatment for Infected Teeth
Contrary to what most believe, the purpose of a root canal is to remove the causes of tooth pain, not to inflict more discomfort. A root canal is usually necessary when a tooth has become infected, due to untreated decay or cavities that cause bacteria to get through the tooth enamel. This infection attacks the sensitive nerves and pulp inside the tooth structure itself, which causes the toothache. If left untreated, a tooth infection can result in a painful abscess forming, a spreading of the infection to other teeth or other parts of the body, and eventual loss of the affected tooth. Our gentle root canal treatment can clean the infection to save your smile from further harmful effects and alleviate discomfort.
Symptoms of Tooth Infection
- Pain in the tooth, jaw or neck
- Tooth sensitivity to hot or cold beverages
- Difficulty or pain when chewing
- Recurring fever
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Swelling of the face
The Root Canal Process
Our doctors are highly skilled in the treatment for tooth infection and perform root canal treatments regularly. A root canal involves gently accessing the interior of the tooth and cleaning out all the infected tooth pulp and nerves. After the infection has been removed, we will then reshape the interior of the tooth canal that has been damaged from decay. A biocompatible material called gutta-percha will then be used to fill the tooth and restore its structure. Finally, a dental crown is used to restore the appearance and function of the treated tooth.
Minimally Invasive, Painless Treatment
Thanks to sedation dentistry, we are able to provide you with a virtually pain and anxiety free root canal experience. We will use local anesthesia to numb the affected tooth to block pain during our treatment. You may only experience a slight pressure at the affected tooth. For those with more extreme dental anxiety, we can provide you with sedation that will ease your fears. We also offer state-of-the-art laser dentistry, for a minimally invasive approach to treatment. This allows us to access the inside of your tooth and clear infection without the need for drills.
