What is TMJ Disorder?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) acts as the hinge that connects your jaw bone to your skull. When this joint gets sore, inflamed or injured, it is known as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) and can cause serious aching jaw pain, migraines, and lock jaw. This condition affects between 5 and 12 percent of the population. Our doctors are experienced in diagnosing the causes and symptoms of TMD and can create a treatment plan to relieve you of pain and treat the cause of the disorder.
Our Treatment Options
When diagnosing TMD, we will likely take a scan of your jaw using our cone beam CT scanner. This image gives us a detailed view of your jaw joints and the structure of your bite. If your teeth are not aligned properly, your jaw will unconsciously attempt to adjust every time you close your mouth or chew. This puts tremendous strain on your joint and muscles, which can cause the symptoms of TMD. We can treat these occlusal misalignments to make your bite more uniform and harmonious. For TMD caused by an inflamed or sore jaw joint, we also offer BOTOX® treatment to relieve the pain and relax the muscle. By injecting BOTOX into the jaw joint, the muscle will be able to relax. This usually requires several treatments, but the results are typically long-lasting.
